I mentioned in my last post, that I have been dealing with the annoying issue of scalp scabs for quite some years, but what I did leave out was a six year remission. Yes, I was totally free of these little scabs and a healthy scalp.
My cure all was a drastic move, but ultimately in the end the right choice for me. Shaving cream and a razor became my best friend, yup I shaved my head bald. The itching, picking and bleeding finally drove me to the edge, my hair had to go.
My decision to join the ranks of millions of men that shave their heads was a final straw after exploring many of the medicated scalp shampoos and treatments currently available. For me these products were more of a band aid then a cure, they seemed to work at first, but soon after my scratching would return. I moved from one scalp product to the next all providing the same results, which was a hell of a burning sensation because of the open sores and scabs, temporary relief, then back to scratching.
Since, I do not have an issue with dandruff, dermatitis, or psoriasis of the scalp, I suspect the reasoning for the failure of such shampoos in my case, but why the scabs?
First, I need to fast forward to the present time, today. About a two months ago I decided to let my hair grow back, it’s been six years since, I seen myself with a head of hair. Curiosity ended up getting the best of me, what was it like to have hair? How much gray was I sporting?
It was no longer then two weeks of growing hair and they’re back! I’m scratching, bleeding and have scalp scabs again, what a bummer. My hands and fingers are constantly digging at my scalp now.

Hey Cat,
That is an extreme move for a lady, so think twice.
Oh boy, you’re at the point you wanna shave your head
If it is indeed dandruff find some good treatment to help control it. If over the counter products are not helping, try some type of specialty dandruff control of the more natural type. There are some great ones out there, just have to test a few to see which works best for your scalp.
Hoping you the best!
I’ve thought about shaving my head; and I’m a woman! I wish I could sometimes, but I’m pretty sure I have one of those unattractive bumpy noggins. Plus, I like my hair. I don’t know why I have scabs, except that I pick at my dandruff. So that’s probably the answer.
Hey,
so did you try to shave your head again and see if the problem goes away? Or you just prefer hair with scabs instead of bald head with healthy skin?
The reason I ask is that I wanted to shave my head as well last winter (I was thinking that it might be the hair causing the problems). If it really is a viable solution (as nothing else seems to work + I do not scratch my head but scabs do not head at all) I would shave my head as well. I would not lose much as I’ve been balding for 8-9 years. My only concern with shaving is that if it would not help to get rid of scabs, I would not be able to go in public without a hat (and I don’t like hats).
Hi!
Have your Drs been able to diagnose what your problem is? I suffer from the same. They came from nowhere. Two scabs, then more and more. Some water after picking. I’ve had cultures for bacterial and fungal infections and they come back negative! So irritating not knowing what it is!
Thank you on your help!
