Today, I just want to post about thoughts running through my head, triggered by a comment, left by a scalp scab suffer by the name of ” Beautifhair”.

Beautifulhair, left a truly touching story on her years of struggle, with the confession of being a “closet picker”, and it’s impact within her personal life. Her heartfelt story can be read here, midway down in the comment section.

This blog came about, because of my own struggle in the past with this condition. I say, “the past” as of this time in my life, things have been just fine, my scalp has recovered from years of abuse, by uncontrollable scratching, leaving it a scabby mess.

Never the less, I do have to stay alert, employ preventable measures, to anything that may induce a flare up. Every once in a while it will happen.

In a way, I feel like a prisoner to this nasty condition, if it’s not an outbreak , it’s constantly being on guard, worrying, waiting, if or when.

Is this the same feeling that a recovering alcoholic or substance abuser has? A monkey on their back, so to speak.

Anyway…..

As more, and more comments are being left, by folks visiting this blog, I see it has been split down the middle. One side (a), being common skin conditions causing their scalp problem, and the other side (b), more of a mental health issue.

Now, I’m not using the term “mental heath” to offend readers, but “OCD”, “stress”, “nervousness” “skin picking” , and so on, does fall under this term, but at the same time, who wants to be labeled with a mental issue?

Side (a) has been getting the attention with post on different skin ailments that can be the cause of scalp scabs, hopefully some useful information that has helped

Side (b) is lacking big time, why? I just didn’t realize the extent, how deep this problem really does go. Having this condition, because of “OCD” ect… and how it’s destroying, simple every day living, is a huge concern, it’s saddening to hear their stories and within their words, a cry for help.

So, now I have some work cut out for me, lets see what’s available to be of more help to side (b). Maybe, some informative post, to help understanding the relationship between “OCD” ect… with scalp scabs. Maybe a self help guide to follow and work through this issue. Not quite sure yet, but my research begins.

Scaly Scalp | Scaling Scalp Causes

Scaly scalp is associated with a few common skin conditions, that attack the scalp area of adults and children, persistent itchy, scratching will become extremely annoying without proper treatment.

A simple treatment, use baby shampoo, but first massage the area with baby oil to first loosen the scaly scalp, consider using a soft, very soft baby hairbrush to help shed the lose flakes. The good news, this condition will go away on it’s own in a short matter of time.

Dandruff, from dead skin cells is common, and everyone at some point in their lives will have a touch of white flakes every now and again. Excessive build up of dead skin and the shedding will give the scalp a scaly appearance.

Best remedy, use a quality dandruff control shampoo, a few treatments should take care of the problem, if condition persists, wash hair two-three times a week with medicated shampoo to control flakes.

Scalp Psoriasis is target to the head area, hence the term, but it is, in general the skin disease psoriasis. Can be painful, with burning, itching feeling to the scalp. Hair loss is a possibility around the infected area, but only temporary.

To treat scalp psoriasis, use a mild scalp treatment, anything stronger will cause a burning sensation, because of the tenderness of the scalp.

Seborrhoeic Eczema, this is a very irritating skin condition that not only affects the head, but many other upper body parts as well, such as forehead, nose, ears, eyebrows, eyelids. Since so many body areas are involved, this has become a serious issue for many. Not only will you have a scaly scalp, all areas will likely, to have an scaly appearance.

This can be a very hard condition to control on ones own, seeking medical attention is recommended, to learn how to control and deal with this condition to fight a scaly scalp.

Ringworm | Scalp and Body Infection

Ringworm, medical name Tinea fungus that forms in a circular form, red with defined edges, center of pattern is of normal skin color, contagious, not a real worm.

I have received a few emails from readers, about ringworm, with the basic questions such as;

What is it?
How did I catch it?
Is it really a worm?
How do I get rid of it?

So, these questions, I thought would make a great post, and after doing some research online, I was able to come up with the basics of, what is Ringworm.

First, time to squash the notion that this fungus is really a worm, living under the skin, it is not.

Tinea, is Latin for ëgrowing wormí, this translated to English is simply “Ringworm” a very unattractive name to say the least.

What it is

A common fungal infection, that targets certain areas of the body, such as the feet, nails, groin and scalp. What is interesting, depending on the area of infection, each is giving a specific name.

Head and scalp – Tinea Capitis
Body – Tinea Corporis
Feet – Tinea Pedis or commonly known as “Athletes Foot”
Groin – Jock Itch

With this information, we can clearly see, that this fungus is not just a scalp condition , but rather a targeted infection that invades several key body parts.

Ringworm the cause

Fungal spores that are all around us, they live on our bodies, we breath them in, harmless, until they invade the body, by way, of a weak point, which is usually a micro tear on the surface of the skin, or scalp. Once inside the body, depending on the strain of the fungal spore, ringworm infection becomes a very possibility, to the host.

Basically, a yeast overgrowth in the body, is a good way to sum it up.

Characteristics and What to look for

This condition is pretty easy to identify, but as always, when in doubt seek medical attention.

Ringworm produces a circular shape, outer edges, are most of the time red in color, the center stays unchanged and is of normal skin tone. Sometimes, and this is not uncommon, the infected area may be so large, that the ring is not noticeable, or clearly defined.

If on the scalp, scalp soreness may be present, as well as patches of hair loss around the area in question, itching if not treated will surly leave scabs on scalp.

Without question, it itches and makes one scratch.

Transference, It is contagious

Ten to fourteen days after indirect contact, tinea is notiable, four to 10 days with direct skin to skin contact they can appear.

There are so many ways, one may come into contact, and end up with this condition, the most common ways are reported as;

•   Contact to contact directly with infected human or animal ( yes, it’s possible to catch from your pet).
•   Sharing objects, such as towels, combs, hair brushes, headgear, clothing.
•   Surface contact of various objects, touched by infected human or animal (bathrooms and locker rooms are a hot spot)

Just a little side note here, some age groups, have an higher rate of contacting ringworm, these are, young children, especially if in day school and young adults that are involved in, contact sport activities, such as wrestling.

Remedy

Popular first choice, is an anti-fungal medication, which may be in either cream or powder form, if no noticeable improvement, then the next step would be a prescription medication in stronger form, or possibly fungal tablets taken orally.

Prevention

Cleanliness is important, keep common areas clean and disinfect, avoid at all cost, the sharing of personal items. Wash sport uniforms regularly,

Children’s toys, if shared with other infants need to be sanitized.

Most of all, just use common sense.

Conclusion

Ringworm of the scalp is very embarrassing, as this area my be more difficult to hid, depending on individual situations.

Hello everyone,

This week, I decided to do some web searching, my goal to find a product for scabs on scalp, something other then, what is found on shelves of local drug stores and the like.

What I found, that seems to be right on target, for such scalp condition as scabs on scalp, is a website name, “Organic Natural Cures”, a very interesting place to visit for unique organic scalp treatments.

The site is very nice and soothing, giving one a calm effect. Nice light green in color, without all the flash that is seen on many sites. Product are packed and bottled in a very classy way, you won’t find no plastic blue bottle there. A very classy site indeed.

Products that are featured, are for just about any type of scalp condition you can image, their list, of some targeted areas are the following.

Seborrheic Dermatitis – Informative Report

Here is a small report on Seborrheic Dermatitis that effects millions of people. This condition is one of a few scalp condition that may be causing you to have Scabs on Scalp.

Seborrheic dermatitis most of the time is target at the scalp, but can also be found on other body part, giving the skin a greasy, scaly and flaky look and feel which contributes to scabs on scalp. As we age into adolescent and adult years, dermatitis is known commonly as dandruff. Other body part that it can affect and commonly found, is on the face, chest, arms, legs and groin. The skin creases of these areas are affected more, then on smooth flat surfaces of the skin. Cradle cap in babies, is an infant case of dandruff caused by this condition.

Seborrheic Dermatitis is more common then we think
Affects adults in the thirty to sixty year range and babies three months and younger. Men are affected much more then women. This condition can cause the severe scratching resulting in scabs on scalp.

Seborrheic Dermatitis and the cause
This is the tricky part, and with such a large group of people suffering from this condition, you would think the answer, would be cut and dry. Doctor and medical researchers still to this day, don’t know the exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis.

It may be handed down within families, or hormone related, because the symptoms tend to disappear after infancy, then reappear in adolescent and adult ages again.

Malassezia which is a fungus is thought to have a role in this condition. This fungus is a normal occurrence on the skin in very small numbers, but as it increases and forms a larger area, thus resulting in skin problems.

It is also reported that Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy which are labeled as neurologic disorders has a connection with seborrheic dermatitis. The exact reason in this relationship is still unknown at this time.

Treatment to control Seborrheic Dermatitis
Effected skin creases is best treated with steroid lotions either over the counter types found in drug stores or even better, a doctor prescribed steroid which would be much stronger, giving better results

Adult and adolescent treatment of the scalp is best treated with name brand shampoos targeted to this condition such as Selsun Blue. It’s best to treat the scalp at least three times a week using such shampoos. These shampoos may greatly control scabs on scalp.

Babies with cradle cap should use shampoo products that are much gentler non-medicated, using a soft brush to loosing up the flakes.

Creases in babies that are effected by seborrheic dermatitis can be treated with a very mild steroid lotion and creams.

Six Years Scalp Scab Free – They’re Back

I mentioned in my last post, that I have been dealing with the annoying issue of scalp scabs for quite some years, but what I did leave out was a six year remission. Yes, I was totally free of these little scabs and a healthy scalp.

My cure all was a drastic move, but ultimately in the end the right choice for me. Shaving cream and a razor became my best friend, yup I shaved my head bald. The itching, picking and bleeding finally drove me to the edge, my hair had to go.

My decision to join the ranks of millions of men that shave their heads was a final straw after exploring many of the medicated scalp shampoos and treatments currently available. For me these products were more of a band aid then a cure, they seemed to work at first, but soon after my scratching would return. Hello and welcome to my blog! This topic, that many may find, a personal attachment to, not by way of affection by any means, but out of sheer annoyance of what, I like to describe as “Bleeders”, a name I coined to refer to this extremely annoying scalp condition that has us scratching until our scalps resemble a bloody, crusted over, micro minefield.

Bleeders, nice huh? This catchy term, has established itself in my household for years, when I say years, I’m talking about the last ten, this is a conservative number by the way, thinking about it, as I type this in real time, more like pushing fifteen years, seem more accurate in my memory.

Here is a little taste of how “Bleeders” has dug-in so well in my world, to complement my on going itchy scabs on scalp battle, and the extremely habit forming act of picking scabs on scalp till they bleed.

Dang, did you have a bleeder party last night? The pillowcase is dotted with blood smears.

I could type out a page long list of these cute, little sayings and terms of endearments, that my wife and kids use to lighten my scalp scab situation. I take no offense to these sayings, I laugh, in the end it was my word, to begin with. Laughing, at the evils in one’s life can be great medicine.

What’s the point of this blog? Simple, It’s my personal quest to find a solution, report what has worked, while giving me an outlet to share my story. With any luck, helpful to fellow scab pickers.
